Present continuous tense describes an action happening now, around now, or a temporary situation. Build it with am, is, or are plus a verb ending in -ing.

Happening now: She is reading a book.
Temporary: We are studying online this week.
Changing: The weather is getting warmer.

The core pattern

Positive: She is reading. They are playing. I am writing.

Negative: She is not reading. The helping verb carries “not.”

Question: Is she reading? Move am, is, or are before the subject.

Spelling: read → reading, write → writing, run → running, lie → lying.

When do we use it?

Right now: The children are playing.
Around now: I am reading a new novel this week.
Temporary: She is staying with her aunt.
Changing situation: The days are getting warmer.

Common misconceptions

Do not omit the helping verb: say “She is reading,” not “She reading.”
Do not use do or does with this tense.
“I” uses am; he, she, and it use is; you, we, and they use are.
The present continuous usually describes an action in progress, not a permanent routine.
