How to read the graph

Height tells acceleration at an instant. Above zero means positive acceleration; below zero means negative acceleration; on zero means constant velocity.

Signed area between the acceleration curve and zero equals change in velocity. Area above zero adds velocity; area below zero subtracts it.

Net force = mass × acceleration
Change in velocity = signed area under the acceleration-time graph
Zero acceleration means constant velocity, not necessarily zero velocity.

All forces represented

Applied force or thrust: engine, cable, rocket engine, or push.
Friction and rolling resistance: oppose sliding or rolling motion.
Air resistance: grows with speed and acts opposite motion.
Weight: gravitational force directed downward.
Normal or support force: surface or cable support that prevents falling through a surface.
Gravity component: on a slope, part of weight accelerates the object downhill.

Important: an object can move forward while acceleration is negative. Negative acceleration means velocity is changing in the negative direction; it does not automatically describe where the object is moving.

Guided investigations

1. Area predicts velocity

Choose Car drive cycle and reset.
Run only the first positive segment, then pause.
Compare the shaded area with the velocity readout.
Continue through braking and explain why the positive and negative areas partly cancel.

2. Elevator comfort

Choose Elevator trip.
Identify start, cruise, and stopping intervals.
Observe that velocity is positive during upward travel even when acceleration is negative near the top.
Explain which intervals would make a passenger feel heavier or lighter.

3. Force competition

Increase resistance, then applied force.
Compare thrust, weight, drag, and net force.
Use the graph to identify when acceleration grows or shrinks.

Graph-shape reasoning

A horizontal acceleration segment produces a straight velocity segment.
A rising acceleration curve makes the velocity graph bend upward more sharply.
Equal positive and negative signed areas produce zero net velocity change.
A sharp acceleration change represents a sudden change in net force.
Increasing mass reduces acceleration when the same net force acts.
