How to solve pulley problems

Draw the moving load or lower block.
Count rope strands pulling upward on that moving block.
Calculate weight: mass × 9.81.
Use efficiency for a realistic effort.
Check the force-distance work trade-off.

Key ideas

Ideal mechanical advantage = supporting strands

Minimum effort = load weight ÷ (strands × efficiency)

Rope distance = supporting strands × load rise

Input work = effort × rope distance

Useful output work = mass × 9.81 × rise

Try these investigations

Keep mass fixed and compare all three systems. Lower efficiency and observe the required pull. Double target height and compare rope distance. Apply slightly less than the required force and predict the motion.
