Key comparison
Both are eukaryotic cells with a nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. Plant cells also have a cellulose cell wall, chloroplasts and a large central vacuole. Typical animal cells have lysosomes and centrioles and usually show a more flexible outline.
Common misconceptions
Plant cells also contain mitochondria and perform cellular respiration. Animal cells have vacuoles too, but they are usually much smaller than the large central vacuole of a mature plant cell.
Real-world connection
Wilting occurs when plant cells lose water and turgor pressure. Muscle cells contain many mitochondria because contraction needs substantial ATP.
