Before you begin: What is the past continuous?

Past continuous tense describes an action that was in progress at a particular time in the past. We look inside a past moment and see the action happening.

Example: She was reading a book at 7 p.m.

Pattern: subject + was/were + verb-ing

The core patterns

The long action usually uses past continuous; the short interrupting event often uses past simple.

Common misconceptions

Keep the helper: say “was reading,” not “reading” alone.
Use were with You, We, and They.
Do not use the past verb after was or were; use verb-ing.
Past continuous shows an action in progress then, not simply a completed event.
