Core idea

Numbers describe how many, how much, or where. Mathematical quantities become useful when we compare them, split them into equal parts, relate them by ratio, scale them proportionally, or express one quantity as a rate or percentage of another.

What the stations show

Number line: integers, opposites, order, and absolute value.
Place-value towers: each position is ten times the position to its right.
Fraction model: numerator counts selected equal parts; denominator counts all equal parts.
Ratio trays: compare two quantities and simplify both by the same factor.
Proportion bridge: equivalent ratios share one scale factor.
Rate track: divide a quantity by time to find a unit rate.
Percent grid: a part out of one hundred.
Rounding hill: choose the nearest benchmark.

Common misconceptions

A negative number farther left is smaller, even when its digit looks larger.
A larger denominator makes equal-sized wholes split into smaller parts.
Equivalent ratios require multiplying or dividing both terms by the same number.
Fifty percent means one half of the current whole, not always the number fifty.
