Living Non-Living

The True Test of Life

Look at the canvas. The trees and beetles have Energy Bars above them, and they gently "breathe" (pulsate). The rocks and crystals are rigid.

Sometimes non-living things trick us! A crystal grows, and wind makes a rock move. But scientists look for INTERNAL processes:

  • Energy Use: Must consume food (beetle) or make energy (tree).
  • Internal Growth: Building cells from inside, not just adding layers outside.
  • Reproduction: Making more of themselves using their own energy.

Experiments to Try

  1. The Wind Test: Increase Wind Force to 5. The rocks roll away. Are they moving themselves? No! The beetles fight the wind.
  2. The Crystal Trick: Add a Crystal. Click it. It gets bigger over time, but look—it has NO energy bar! It grows by adding layers on the outside.
  3. The Energy Cycle: Watch a beetle approach a tree. You'll see a floating +Energy text when it feeds!
