For an ideal gas, pressure, volume, amount, and temperature are linked by PV = nRT. Pressure rises when collisions become more frequent or harder.
Boyle: at fixed temperature and amount, smaller volume means higher pressure. Charles: at fixed pressure and amount, warmer gas occupies more volume. Avogadro: at fixed pressure and temperature, more gas needs more volume.
Applications & misconceptions
Tire pressure changes with temperature; syringes demonstrate Boyle’s law; hot-air balloons expand warm air; aerosol cans warn against heating.
Misconception: gas particles do not swell to fill space. They move farther apart. Temperature measures average kinetic energy, not “stored heat particles.” Real gases depart from this simple model at very high pressure or low temperature.
