Key ideas

For equal wholes, more shaded area means a greater fraction. Equal denominators mean equal piece sizes. With equal numerators, the smaller denominator gives larger pieces.

Equivalent fractions have the same value. Common denominators create equal-sized pieces; cross-products provide an exact check for positive fractions.
