The octet rule is a useful pattern, not an absolute law. Stable Lewis structures may be electron-deficient, contain an odd electron, or place more than eight electrons around a suitable central atom.

Equations and rules

Total valence electrons = sum of each atom's valence electrons

Electrons around center = 2 × bond order sum + nonbonding electrons on center

Formal charge = valence − nonbonding − ½(bonding electrons)

Incomplete: fewer than 8. Odd-electron: odd total count. Expanded: more than 8 around an eligible central atom.

Suggested experiments

Compare CH₄ and BF₃ while watching the central shell counter.
Switch between NO and NO₂ and locate the unpaired electron.
Rotate PCl₅ to distinguish axial and equatorial bonds.
Rotate SF₆ and count six equivalent sulfur-fluorine bonds.
